Multiplier Workshop on the Role of Active learning in Math and Engineering Curricula for Unmotivated Students
There are three aspects that contribute to the lack of motivation for students, the relatedness, the competence and the autonomy. According to some authors, being close to teachers, other students and other adults in the school environment, leads to the fulfillment of students’ sense of relatedness. The opportunities for personal choice and the autonomy support encourages students to provide a sense of autonomy and intrinsic motivation towards learnings. The more these qualities are present in the school setting, the more motivated the students become. Therefore, it is important to design activities that promote higher order thinking skills such as collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving. Active learning activities can range from low-stakes to high stakes activities.
The aim of this workshop is to discuss the research findings of the on-going project and share experience with multi players from educational institutions, welcoming cases and learned lessons from other researchers.
