Stefan Streif studied Engineering Cybernetics, with majors in systems and control and bioprocess engineering, at the University of Stuttgart (Germany) and University of Sheffield (UK).
In 2011, he obtained a Ph.D. with distinction (summa cum laude) in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from the University of Magdeburg (Germany), the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry (Martinsried, Germany) and the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems (Magdeburg, Germany).
From 2011 to 2014 he held a group leader and lecturer position at the Systems Theory and Automatic Control Laboratory at the University of Magdeburg and obtained a Habilitation degree (venia legendi) in control theory from the same institution.
He was also a visiting researcher at different research institutes for several months each, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA), at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway) and the Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems (Toulouse, France).
From 2014 to 2015, he was an Assistant Professor for Automation Engineering at the Ilmenau University of Technology (Germany).
In 2015, he became full professor for automatic control and system dynamics at the Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany).
He became the dean of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Information Technology in 2019 and was reelected in 2022.
In 2023 he became a group leader of the Fraunhofer IME (Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology; Section Bioresources) as well as a member of the steering committee for Controlled Environment Agriculture of the German Agricultural Research Alliance (DAFA).
Stefan Streif's research interests include nonlinear control and estimation as well as optimal control with particular focus on robust, adaptive and learning-based methods.
His work is both theoretical and application-oriented.
Application areas are diverse with a major focus on sustainable food production, controlled-environment agriculture, bio-based production and energy systems.
He served as program committee member and associate editor for various international conferences, including the Conference Editorial Board of the IEEE Control Systems Society.
