Valence-Bond-Tournament 2024

Dear students and staff,

We are pleased to inform you that we are reviving the Valence-Bond-Tournament this year. We cordially invite you to play beach volleyball on 26 June at 15:30 on the sports field on Reichenhainer Straße. In addition to sporting activities, you can also expect a barbecue and, thanks to your numerous participation in the TUCpanel, free drinks.

You can register your teams here until Sunday 23 June at 20:00.

General procedure

If there are 8 or more teams, there will be preliminary rounds played. The extend will be dependant on the amount of teams participating. Places 1 to 4 are played in semi finals and finals.

External referees will be used. A third, non playing team provides 2 linesmen and a scorekeeper. If there are a sufficient number of teams, a draw will be held to determine which team is responsible for the linesmen and scorekeepers.

A team consists of 4 players, at least three of whom must be chemists. At least 1 female player must be on the court for at least one set per match. 1 substitute player per team is allowed. Players may be substituted after each set.

A match is played in two winning sets, which can be played to a maximum of 25 points and are limited to 10 minutes each. The 2 point rule applies, so a 2 point lead to win the set is required.

If two sets are won, the team advances to the next round. If the sets are tied, the points difference decides. If both are equal, the higher score in both sets decides. If these are also equal, a deciding set is played.

A deciding third set is played to 15 points. The line and side of play are changed in the first two sets and decided by draw in the third set.

Rules

A rally begins with a player from one team hitting a serve ( from behind the court) by arm or hand over the net to the other side of the court. The ball may not be blocked on the serve.

The receiving team must return the ball to the opponent's court and must not drop the ball on the ground (within its own court).

A team may play the ball up to 3 times before the ball must cross the net again. Contact during a block attempt at the net does not count. The ball may not be caught/held/thrown. No player may touch the ball twice in succession.

A rally lasts until either
(1) one team manages to get the ball on the floor of the opponent's court.
(2) a team makes a mistake.

The team that has won the rally may serve at the start of the next rally.

If the right to serve changes from one team to the other, then another player from that team must serve: you rotate one position clockwise.

The ball may be played with any part of the body as long as it is only a short contact. This means that feet, legs and e.g. the head are also permitted. When serving, only the forearm and hand are allowed.

Any team can score points, regardless of whether they have the right to serve or not. This means that one point is scored for each rally.

The ball itself may touch the net when crossing it during every rally, even when serving.

Reaching/grasping over the net is not permitted. Touching the net by the players is also not permitted. If it is obviously unintentional, there are no consequences.

Errors

Errors lead to the opposing team winning points and the right to serve. Errors include:

(1) The ball is hit out of bounds by the attacking team and does not land within the opposing team's court. The lines count as part of the court.
(2) A team plays the ball with more than three contacts.
(3) A player touches the ball twice in succession.
(4) A player reaches over the net or deliberately touches it.
(5) When serving, the serving player does not stand with both feet behind the court.
(6) The serve is not executed with the hand or forearm.
(7) When serving, the opposing team's view is intentionally blocked by players at the net. (Fairplay)
(8) The team does not rotate after winning the right to serve
