Goddesses in Literature: A Feminist Seminar
Course Description
This course is addressed to those students who take an interest in feminist studies or, to use a more recent term, in gender studies. We will read a variety of texts taken from these studies and use them in order to analyse literary texts, i.e. to detect different kinds of goddesses in a variety of literary texts. Doing so we will deal with Roman and Greek mythology as well as with the concept of archetypes established by C.G. Jung. Please note that only those students can be admitted to this course who have successfully attended "Introduction to the Study of Literature" and can present the Schein for this introduction in the first session of our course. Please note that Anne Schröder's seminar "Language and Gender" is related in topic and we recommend participation in both seminars.
Requirements for a Leistungsschein:
- Regular attendance and participation in discussions, an oral presentation and a term paper. Attendance at the first session is obligatory.
Required reading:
- One of the main texts will be available at the university bookshop UNIVERSITAS: Bolen, Jean Shinoda. Göttinnen in jeder Frau: Psychologie einer neuen Weiblichkeit. Basel: Sphinx, 1993.
- The other texts will be provided in the first session in the form of an anthology especially designed for this seminar.
