A Brief History of English Literature
in 13.5 Chapters

Course Description

 

This course is designed as a general introduction to, and a condensed survey of, the history  of English literature from Old English Literature to  post-modern/contemporary writing in the British Isles. Landmarks in English literature as well as major  authors and major genres will be discussed in their  respective historical, socio-political, and cultural  contexts: (1) Beowulf and Old English Literature, (2)  Chaucer and Middle English Literature, (3) Shakespeare's  Friends and Elizabethan Literature, (4) Shakespeare,  (5) Donne, Milton, and 17th-C. Literature,  (6) Sterne and 18th-C. Literature, (7) Wordsworth,  Byron, and Romantic Poetry, (8) Jane Austen and the Romantic-Era Novel, (9) the Brontё Sisters and Victorian Literature, (10) Joyce and High Modernism, (11) 1956 and All That, (12) Metafiction and Postmodernism, (13) Eng. Lit. and Postcolonialism.
