SMO - Shuttle-Modellregion-Oberfranken
Since 2021, six highly automated minibuses have been operating on public roads in the Upper Franconian cities of Hof, Kronach and Rehau and Bad Steben. The goal is to address important research questions for driverless local public transport by establishing shuttle operations in public transport, as the mobility sector faces major challenges to achieve CO2 reduction targets. The combination of digital innovations and locally emission-free drives is becoming increasingly important. The new technologies have the potential to strengthen public transport beyond the major cities and make it more efficient, more flexible and optimally adapted to the needs of users. In view of the demographic development, securing a demand-oriented, climate-friendly and economical public transport service in the long term is a particular challenge, especially in more rural regions. Funded by Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.
The highly automated vehicles from the Navya company offer space for a maximum of ten passengers. People with limited mobility also have access by means of a ramp. The maximum permitted speed is currently 18 km/h.
