TIMS - Train Integrity Monitoring System
The European Train Control System (ETCS) requires a track vacancy message in order to operate following trains on the same section of track. This is currently done with track-bound infrastructure. By dispensing with track-side track vacancy detection, costs can be reduced and capacity utilisation increased. The TIMS project is looking at on-board monitoring of the vehicle formation, especially for freight trains. One objective is the development of a procedure for monitoring train integrity that is suitable for everyday and railways use, taking into account the special conditions in rail freight traffic on the basis of a functional approach. TU-Chemnitz is analyzing and evaluating various radio technologies for data transmission, as well as measurement and sensor technology for length determination, and investigating them under various railway-like conditions. The feasibility is investigated on the basis of a theoretical analysis and tested by means of a demonstrator on a test track under real conditions.
