Different visual and acoustic warning signals: Performance and acceptance

Partner

VW® (Volkswagen AG)

Description

In an experimental design we studied different warning signals in a close to reality setting.
Participants completed a simple driving simulation while reacting as fast as possible to either a visual or acoustic warning signal. They drove a simple three-lane street. In a given distance, road signs indicated the appropriate lane to which they had to change. For manoeuvring, subjects used a steering-wheel, on which also the button necessary for reacting to the warning signals was installed. As results show, suitability of warning signals is very much dependent on dangerousness and driving situation.
