Computers in the Faculty of Mathematics

At the Faculty of Mathematics we currently count about 200 computers. Some of these devices are available in publicly accessible rooms to all employees, students and guests of the faculty. The majority of the computers are located directly at the workplace of our employees.
The support of the entire technology is the responsibility of the staff of the Mathematics Computing Service in close cooperation with the University Computing Service.
Access to the public rooms is possible by means of a student or employee ID card. The use of the computers of the faculty requires an activation from the Mathematics Computing Service. The formalities are regulated by the usage regulations (only in German).

Computer only accessible via network:

In addition to the above-mentioned publicly accessible computers, some computers of the faculty are only accessible via the network.

We ask you to observe the following points when using the compute servers:
  1. Storage of large amounts of data
    • When producing large amounts of data, please note that home directories have finite space and hosting/backup etc. of huge amounts of data generate significant costs.
    • For storing large, temporary amounts of data from computer data, etc., the Linux compute servers have the /LOCAL directory that anyone can use.
Convention: Store own data under /LOCAL/nkz (nkz = own MRZ user ID) and please pay attention to the allocation of suitable rights.

      mkdir /LOCAL/nkz
      chmod go-rwx /LOCAL/nkz

    • These /LOCAL/... directories do not have any backup and can disappear at any time due to failure, maintenance etc.. If possible, the MRZ consults with the users, but the backup of important results is in the responsibility of the users themselves. The MRZ is happy to advise on any questions.
  2. Runtime/uptime of the compute servers
    • Due to maintenance work, the compute servers can experience a reboot at any time. The monitoring of the computations or the appropriate setting of breakpoints in order to be able to restart aborted computations there is in the responsibility of the users. Here, too, the MRZ is happy to assist with any questions.
