The university was founded in the 15th century and reopened in 1962 after nearly 200 years of closure. Today, it is one of the leading multidisciplinary universities in France, located in a region characterized by economic activity and population growth. The university has campuses in Nantes, Saint-Nazaire, and La Roche-sur-Yon, the latter hosting the Faculty of Law and Political Science. Many programs have a strong European focus, particularly in EU law and institutions, and the university offers a double degree with some European partner universities.

The city of Nantes, with approximately 280,000 inhabitants, is the sixth-largest city in France. Located near the Atlantic coast, it was once the capital of Brittany. Nantes was named European Green Capital in 2013 and boasts several attractions, such as the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and the Machines de l’île, a collection of mechanical animals and puppets inspired by Jules Verne.
