AI Tools for teaching
Since 2022, AI tools have been increasingly used in higher education:
- to support the creation of teaching materials
- as a tool for students
- as a tool for translating teaching materials
- to generate assignments
Legal Framework
Currently, there are no legal frameworks and experiences for the use of ChatGPT by OpenAI or similar generated data and content. This is particularly critical from a data protection and copyright perspective.
The Data Protection Officer of the TU Chemnitz has made the following assessment:
- Several administrative proceedings have been initiated against OpenAI, which are still ongoing.
- An example of such a hearing letter can be found at the following link: https://www.datenschutzzentrum.de/uploads/chatgpt/20230419_Request-OpenAI_ULD-Schleswig-Holstein_IZG.pdf .
From a data protection perspective, these questions cannot be answered without the cooperation of OpenAI, so that the responsibilities in the use of ChatGPT are currently not fully clarified. The same applies to the underlying training data, which is currently unclear on what legal basis they were processed and are being processed.
However, the Rektorat supports the procurement and use of AI applications like ChatGPT or similar applications at the TU Chemnitz. However, it is essential to ensure that the legal restrictions and frameworks that the Präsidium of the German Research Foundation (DFG) sees in the use are observed.
AI Applications for Use at the TU Chemnitz
Depending on the purpose, different AI applications can be used. A list of available and procurable software licenses can be found below.

The company is based in Hamburg and has specialized in offers specifically for schools and teachers (primary and secondary education). In addition, a wide range of training and further education programs (online formats) are available around digital tools for teaching, which are partly free. These can also be adapted to the teaching in the university context.
To use the tools, a license must be obtained and confirmed through the software portal. The costs apply annually per account.

AI-Dienste der GWDG
The GWDG (Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen) as a computing and IT competence center for the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft and the University of Göttingen, provides a platform with various Large Language Models (LLM) as a simple chat interface for free use. However, OpenAI GPT-3.5 and OpenAI GPT-4 are excluded.
Access is granted through a supported registration directly through the TUC account. An additional account or registration is not required.
ChatGPT
Currently, no central licenses are procured for ChatGPT, as no suitable license models have been established yet. Procurement "in-house" is possible through the central procurement. Please contact the responsible colleague in advance.
You will then receive a corresponding information sheet, which must be signed and returned first. Only after the return of the information sheet can the approval for a decentralized procurement be granted.
