Research focus

The research focus of the Department of Sports Medicine and Sports Therapy is on further individualization and personalization of physical training concepts for recreational and elite sports performance and health. Our goal is to further improve our understanding of the mechanisms underlying biological adaptations induced by physical training. In this context, we also incorporate and further advance the use of technologies, such as wearable sensors.

The specific focus areas of the Department can be summarized as follows.

  • Mechanistic investigation of applied exercises interventions (also touching upon basic science approaches) with the goal of understanding and maximizing acute physiological/biological effects and chronic adaptations
  • Application (translation) of these concepts to improve the effectiveness and efficacy of physical training for specifically defined target groups of any age and sex (i.e. competitive sports, recreational sports, sedentary individuals, physical education and individuals with various chronic diseases)
