REyeker: Remote Eye Tracker

Eye tracking can be used to find out,
how developers read and comprehend source code and how this relates to cognitive processes.
However, studies with eye trackers are usually tied to a laboratory and require a very participant-based study design,
which is particularly challenging in the current pandemic situation.

To enable safe and parallel observation, there is now REyeker,
which allows study directors to design and distribute studies online. Which has the consequence
that a larger amount of participant data can be collected in less time.

REyeker blurs the original image,
to distort text regions and affect readability. This forces participants to click on
areas of the image to make them visible/readable.

Although REyeker can only track eye movements to a limited extent, of course,
it allows the investigators to gain a basic understanding of the reading behavior of programmers.

Here is a small visualization of what a participant would see and what a generated heatmap based on this data might look like.
