Professor Till Clausmeyer becomes a new member of the Forming Technology Working Group (AGU)

The members of the Forming Technology Working Group (AGU) accepted Professor Till Clausmeyer as a new member at their working meeting on 6 March 2024 at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The AGU pursues the goal of scientifically based technical and economic development of forming technology. Its members represent research-intensive universities and non-university institutions. In future, Chemnitz will be actively represented in the AGU by two members. Professor Birgit Awiszus was Head of the Chair of Virtual Manufacturing Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology until 30 September 2023 and has been successfully involved in the association, which was founded in 1974, since 2001. With his appointment to the Chair of Forming Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology, Professor Clausmeyer has taken over the teaching and research activities of the Chair of Virtual Production Technology (provisional head until 29 February 2024: Dr Carolin Binotsch). The Professorship of Forming Technology also includes the teaching and research activities of the Professorship of Forming and Joining, which was most recently provisionally headed by Dr Andreas Kunke. On 1 March 2024, the symbolic handover of the baton from the former professorships to Professor Clausmeyer took place during a ceremony. Birgit Awiszus and Till Clausmeyer are looking forward to working together at Chemnitz University of Technology and their joint representation in the AGU.

Kick-off for the establishment of a ZIM innovation network for the sustainability of additive manufacturing processes

Last Thursday, 14 March 2024, around 50 participants from industry and science met at Chemnitz University of Technology with the aim of establishing a ZIM innovation network on the topic of the sustainability of additive manufacturing processes. The highlights of the event were the inspiring presentations: Prof Julia Hufenbach spoke about material development for additive manufacturing, while Dr Karsten Pischang from PT+A GmbH spoke about resource efficiency in the MIM process. Dr Rüdiger Lux from Westfälische Drahtindustrie GmbH addressed the basics of wire drawing, and Lukas Olawsky from ALOtec Dresden GmbH presented efficient repair methods in mechanical engineering. Finally, Alex Henneböhle from HEGGEMANN AG gave an exciting insight into quality assurance at WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing). The event offered plenty of space for intensive discussions and the exchange of potential project ideas. The event was organised in cooperation with VEMASinnovativ e.V. and Building 3D e.V. and received support from Wirtschaftsfürderung Sachsen GmbH. If you are interested in actively participating in the network, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Transnational consortium researches novel hydrogen stotage system

A promising approach to the efficient storage of hydrogen is currently being developed by an interdisciplinary team of Chemnitz researchers in collaboration with colleagues from Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Their focus is on the development and implementation of innovative hydrogen storage solutions based on high entropy alloys.

The joint initiative unites scientists from the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) in Kosice, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (UWB), the company SVÙM and the Chair of Forming and Joining (UFF). Under the experienced leadership of Prof. Karel Saksl (SAS) and Prof. Ludmila Kucerova, extensive expertise in the field of metal hydride storage is contributed. The project is part of the EU-funded M-Era.Net project "H2MobilHydride" and aims to improve the capacity as well as the kinetic properties of hydrogen uptake and release by novel compositions of high entropy alloys. Special attention is given to the investigation of the influence of the processing of these alloys on the storage capacity. The UFF professorship aims to increase the storage capacity by means of targeted forming of defect structures in the metal lattice. In this way, it makes a significant contribution to the optimization of metal hydride storage systems.
