Call from Chemnitz to the world: special issue on plasma electrolytic oxidation is open for contribution submission

Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is a process for producing oxidic coatings on metallic materials in aqueous solutions under the influence of spark discharges. The essential principles of the process were developed in the 1980s at the former TH Karl-Marx-Stadt. Since then, PEO has been used in many ways, especially as a surface treatment of light metals for demanding applications in process engineering, medical technology and aerospace engineering. Current scientific articles point to the feasibility of opening up new material groups and property profiles through the process. This results in enormous potential for opening up new technical areas of application.

Therefore, the planned special issue aims at the fundamental understanding of the layer formation mechanisms in new base material-electrolyte systems as well as the fabrication of microstructure-property relationships of the resulting novel PEO layers. The contributions may cover the following key topics, among others:

  • new methods and approaches for process diagnostics and materials science analysis of PEO coatings,
  • Electrolyte and process development for the PEO of previously untapped base materials, the substitution of chemicals hazardous to health and/or the saving of energy,
  • functional properties of novel PEO coatings, such as mechanical, chemical, optical, electrical or bioactive properties, and the extension of functionality through post-treatment.

Contributions can still be submitted until 31 July 2022. All necessary information can be found on the special edition website at:
