First Research Seminar „Digital Manufacturing of Ceramics“ for students

As part of the course „Surface and Interface Engineering“ students had the opportunity to take part in the research seminar „Digital Manufacturing of Ceramics“ for the first time. The full-day research seminar took place at the Fraunhofer Centre for High Temperature Lightweight Construction HTL in Bayreuth and was organised and conducted by Professor Friedrich Raether and his team.

Lectures provided basic knowledge about the current state of science and technology for the production of ceramics. The focus was on the digitalisation of the process using digital twins. Through the so-called „Integrated Computational Material Engineering (ICEM)“ , high-performance ceramics can be developed in a cost- and resource-efficient way through optimal process control, which have a property profile adapted to the specific application. Additive manufacturing, which enables the production of filigree, complex-shaped ceramic components on different size scales, also plays an important role here. In laboratory tours, the students were able to experience the various processes used for this purpose.

Another highlight was the laboratory practicals, in which the students were able to independently analyse thermomechanical and microstructural properties of ceramics under supervision. The thermal shock behaviour was determined using laser testing technology and the damage to the material was examined using computer tomography. The computer tomographic data was further evaluated using an artificial neural network, so that the students were given a comprehensive insight into current research.

We are very pleased that we will be able to offer this seminar again next winter semester and would like to thank Professor Raether and his team very much.
