WOT excursion to Sachsen Guss GmbH

On 27.09.2023, the employees of the WOT professorship were able to experience a first-class excursion. We spent three hours at Sachsen Guss GmbH and learned a lot about the special features, outstanding properties and still to be exploited potential of modern iron casting alloys. The guided tour through the production halls opened the eyes of some of our scientists to what really matters in processes on an industrial production scale.

Sachsen Guss GmbH is an owner-managed company with medium-sized structures in the Chemnitz district of Wittgensdorf. Melting, casting and moulding have a long tradition at Sachsen Guss. As early as 1898, the original company, Eisen- und Metall-Gießerei Hugo Schreiter, began producing 3,500 tonnes of cast iron. Today, 790 employees process around 75,000 tonnes of iron annually into products through several name changes. The range covers the manufacture of machine- and hand-formed iron castings from 0.5 kg to 25 t, from one-off production to series production. Unique in this sector is the high vertical range of manufacture of Sachsen Guss. Thus, during the guided tour through the various production sections, we were able to witness the entire process chain from basic conception to mould making, the process of melt preparation, casting and finishing to final machining and assembly of units.

The entire professorship would like to take this opportunity to thank the colleagues at Sachsen Guss GmbH once again for the friendly reception, the interesting guided tour and the profitable exchange of knowledge.
