7th Materials Technology Colloquium Chemnitz (30. 09./01. 10. 2004)

On 30 September and 1 October 2004, the 7th Materials Technology Colloquium took place at the Chair of Composite Materials at Chemnitz University of Technology in accordance with a long-standing tradition. At the beginning of the conference, the chair holder, Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. B. Wielage, welcomed all conference participants to Chemnitz. He extended a special greeting to the guests of honour Prof. Dr. Milewski from the Institute for Precision Mechanics in Warsaw, Prof. Dr. Pawlowski from the University of Villeneuve in France and the honorary doctor of the faculty, Prof. Dr. H.-D. Steffens.

Prof. Wielage took the occasion of 7 years of the Materials Technology Colloquium to give a brief review of past events. The conferences, which are dedicated to a special field of materials research each year, now encompass a considerable potential of scientific results and technical know-how. Particular importance was and is attached at these events to the close contact between university research and industrial application, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. During this time, the Chemnitz Colloquia on Materials Technology have contributed to the fact that many scientific innovations have already found their way into practice and, on the other hand, new scientific tasks have arisen from problems posed by industrial research. Over the past years, there has been a steady increase in the number of scientific contributions as well as in the number of visitors. The reasons for this are an increasing level of awareness of the conference as well as a specialisation on individual topics, which has prevailed over the past events.

Prof. Wielage also did not fail to mention the origins of mechanical engineering development in Chemnitz, which was also often referred to as the “Saxon Manchester”. The roots of today's TU Chemnitz lie in the training of craftsmen, manufacturers and technicians and later also engineers for mechanical engineering requirements.

Prof. Wielage also focused on the latest developments in the field of materials science at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He briefly outlined the research goals of the Chair of Composite Materials and the Chair of Mechanical Engineering Materials. The two materials science chairs at Chemnitz University of Technology are currently in the process of placing their research on a joint basis. The newly founded IWW – Institute for Materials Science and Technology will form the umbrella for both research institutions within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Following these introductory words, the conference was launched with the plenary lecture by Prof. Crostack on the topic of „Non-destructive testing of coatings“. He contrasted different approaches to analysis possibilities for the goal of predicting the strength and service life of coatings. The focus was on the possibilities and limits of the individual non-destructive examination methods.

The theme of this year's conference was new materials and processes in coating technology. The entire lecture programme was essentially structured in two sessions. The individual sessions on thermal spraying, shot blasting, surface treatment, build-up welding, nanomaterials in coating technology, thin-film technology and electroplating were each opened with an overview lecture. These overview lectures were given by Dr. Jungklaus (thermal coating in the paper industry), by Prof. Dr. Zenker (electron beam coating – current status and trends), by Dr. Schultheiß (application of nanomaterials in coating technology), by Prof. Dr. Bräuer (new applications of carbon-based coating systems) and by Prof. Dr. Kanani (electroplating – modern and yet 2000 years old – a historical outline). The overview lectures each offered an excellent opportunity to grasp the current status of each focus in the context of its development to date. The short lectures that followed provided comprehensive insights into the latest research results and modern production processes.

The event was framed by an industrial and poster exhibition with new developments in materials production, treatment, refinement and characterisation. It showed the close cooperation between research and development and the application of scientific findings. The presentations came from research institutions as well as small and medium-sized enterprises, so that a broad forum was provided for joint discussions on both research and development work and practical applications. The focus was on application-oriented problem solutions.

The evening event on 30.9. offered all participants the opportunity to make new contacts, refresh contacts with acquaintances and discuss questions about lectures. The cultural framework was a short programme by the 1st Chemnitz Cabaret.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Wielage expressed his pleasure at the successful conference. The multitude of issues discussed on the topic of „Coating Technologies“ offered rich potential for research as well as for industrial use in SMEs. However, a broad interest was shown in the new processes for nanotechnology within the framework of the thematic focus. In conclusion, Prof. Wielage thanked all participants for their contributions and his staff for their support in preparing the conference and issued an invitation for the 8th Chemnitz Materials Technology Colloquium (WTK).
