German Language Support
Since August 2015, we have been offering support to refugees in learning the German language. Many refugees in Chemnitz do not know about their future and are not yet allowed to visit German language courses in regular schools (e.g. adult education centres). Therefore, we - like many other volunteers at the TU Chemnitz - offer help with acquiring German skills for daily usage and assist in answering questions concerning formalities as well as clarifying cultural differences or other difficulties that might arise. In this context we do not work as professional teachers, but as volunteer helpers who do everything they can in order to give an initial orientation in the German language and the new environment.
Consequently, our project offers a great intercultural and bilingual platform to refugees and Germans alike. The project members have the opportunity of ''teaching'' and getting to know people from Syria, Tunisia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, Eritrea, Libya, and from the Balkan States.
Our project thus helps to reduce prejudices against and change views of foreigners in the host culture. In other words, we encounter people who have to experience the difficulty of having to adjust to a new country.
