Workshop: Academic Conversation
Objectives and Content
The course is an upper-intermediate / advanced English (B2/C1) course especially designed for scientists who need to present the results of their research appropriately and effectively, e.g. to defend theses, make presentations at international conferences or co-operate in international research teams. It deals with rhetorical techniques, oral presentation skills, non-verbal communication, designing and preparing written supporting documents for presentations as well as communication in informal environments including small talk. If interested, participants may submit excerpts from their scientific writing for feedback from their native-speaker instructor.
Approach
The course runs over a period of 90 minutes a week. Participants are invited to present their work orally in a formal academic situation, to answer questions related to their presentations, and to lead a seminar discussion on their topic of research. In addition, participants are provided with opportunities to give oral summaries and lead discussions on various topics.
Target group and participants
The course is aimed at academic staff and PhD students from all faculties. In addition, Master's students who have already completed English Course 4 and would like to prepare for their Master's thesis or defence in English can register for this course.
Goal
Participants are able to communicate their ideas and projects to their fellow participants in an effective and professional way.
A presentation and / or oral summary with discussion completes the course.
