New appointments to the university

On December 1, 2021 two professors were newly appointed at Chemnitz University of Technology by the President

Prof. Dr. Jonas Hensel has been appointed to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology effective December 1, 2021. He heads Professorship of Welding Technology.

Prof. Dr. Florian Gunter Röhrbein has been appointed to tenure track Professorship of Neurorobotics at the Faculty of Computer Science effective December 1, 2021.

The formal appointment by the President of Chemnitz University of Technology, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, will take place at a later date.

About Prof. Dr. Jonas Hensel

Jonas Hensel graduated in civil engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig. For his Master of Science in Ocean Engineering, he went to the University of Rhode Island (USA) in 2008. After working as a calculation engineer at Hochtief Construction AG in Hamburg, he worked as a research assistant at TU Braunschweig. Hensel received his doctorate there in 2017 with a dissertation on the topic of "Influence of welding residual stress on the fatigue strength evaluation of welded joints in the nominal stress concept".

Hensel conducted research and taught as a research associate at Technische Universität Braunschweig from 2010 until he accepted the call to Chemnitz University of Technology.

About Prof. Dr. Florian Gunter Röhrbein

Florian Röhrbein studied computer science at the Technical University of Munich, where he graduated with honors. He then moved to LMU Munich as a research assistant and received his doctorate in 2005 with a PhD thesis.

A four-year industrial stay at the Honda Research Institute Europe was followed by a postdoctoral period at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.
After several stays at the University of Bremen, he habilitated there in computer science and went back to the Technical University of Munich, where he worked, among other things, as managing director for the neurorobotics section of the Human Brain Project and became chief editor of the journal "Frontiers in Neurorobotics".

From 2018 to 2020, Röhrbein led a research group at Alfred Kärcher SE & Co. KG, for which he developed a company-wide AI strategy. He then founded several startups and became Chief Technology Officer of aivious GmbH in Munich and also of oxolo GmbH in Hamburg before he was appointed full professor at Chemnitz University of Technology.
