In Focus: Development of Efficient and Explainable Algorithms for the Analysis of Large Data Sets
Junior research group SALE takes stock of successful interim results after two years of project runtime - SALE will present itself at several events in 2023
The junior research group SALE (Fast Algorithms for Transparent Recommender Systems) led by Dr. Franziska Nestler from the Faculty of Mathematics held a project meeting at Chemnitz University of Technology on February 17, 2023. The project team, which has included members from Chemnitz University of Technology and TU Berlin since October 2020, successfully took stock here and discussed current project priorities and ideas for future work.
The goal of the project is the development of efficient and explainable algorithms for the analysis of large amounts of data (Big Data). The project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, involves both basic mathematical research on high-dimensional approximation and the development of methods that can be used in applications. So far, members of the junior research group have been able to publish a number of papers in recognized journals. "A number of other publications are still in progress or in planning. The methods developed so far have been tested using both artificial and real data sets," reports Nestler. "In the remaining time of the project, we want to try to talk more with users in order to increasingly test the developed algorithms in application-oriented scenarios. The exchange between the three SALE subprojects and the merging of their content will now also be intensified," adds Nestler.
For the year 2023, a lot of things are in the program: Already on February 3, 2023, the junior research group SALE was represented at the kick-off event and performance show of the campaign SPIN2030 of the Saxon Ministry of Science (SMWK) in Leipzig. With this campaign, the SMWK wants to showcase the performance of Saxony as a location for research and innovation and set the course for the strategic development of the Free State in the areas of research and teaching. Together with Prof. Dr. Daniel Potts, head of the Professorship of Applied Functional Analysis, the research results on interpretable AI methods were presented to the visitors, among them Saxony's Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow. In addition, Nestler will be present at the SWS Forum of Südwestsachsen Digital e. V. on March 28, 2023 in Chemnitz. The junior research group SALE will also host the Women in Data Science conference at Chemnitz University of Technology - as it did last year. Interested parties should keep May 4 and 5, 2023 in mind. Last but not least, the junior research group will participate in the organization of the Summer School on Applied Analysis 2023 from September 18 to 22, 2023 in Chemnitz.
