Prof. Dr. Stefan Streif, Professorship of Automatic Control and System Dynamics at Chemnitz University of Technology, is a new member of the steering group for the Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) platform of the German Agricultural Research Alliance (dafa). In the future, he will contribute his expertise, particularly in the areas of modeling and control of closed and coupled production units, to this interdisciplinary committee. The common goal is to create a strong network of research institutions in the field of producing plants, fungi, invertebrates, and fish under controlled conditions. "The importance of this area of agriculture is increasing worldwide, as it is seen as a central building block for ensuring our future food supply," says Streif, who also deals with the optimization of insect protein production scientifically and publishes on the subject. "I would like to bring my system-oriented perspective as a control engineer to the steering group and strive for synergies with the other disciplines to contribute to a sustainable and future-proof agriculture," says Streif.
About the person: Prof. Dr. Stefan Streif
Stefan Streif was born in Ravensburg in 1979 and studied Technical Cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart and the University of Sheffield (UK). He completed his dissertation at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry (Martinsried) and the Max Planck Institute for the Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems (Magdeburg) in the field of systems biology. In 2011, he received his doctorate from the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. Subsequently, he worked at the same university as a lecturer, project manager, and habilitation candidate in the field of control engineering and systems theory. He then had longer stays abroad at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, USA), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway), and the Laboratory for Analysis and Architecture of Systems (Toulouse, France). In 2014, he was appointed Junior Professor at the Ilmenau University of Technology (Department of Automation) and moved to his current position at Chemnitz University of Technology in 2015. The main focus of his research is the development of methods for control, analysis, identification, and optimization of dynamic processes and the application of these methods in the field of energy, automation, and agricultural systems. Since 2019, he has been Dean of his Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. Currently, he is also involved in setting up a new department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology, Institute Section Bioresources, in Giessen.
