From Ecomobile to Driver Assistance Systems

Students and researchers of the Chemnitz University of Technology present current projects and research results at the “Messe Chemnitz” in the course of the 14th car showroom Chemnitz from March 17 till 19, 2017. The student initiative “Fortis Saxonia” of the Chemnitz University presents their ecomobile “Sax 4” in a special show regarding “Electric Mobility”. With this extremely economical mobile they repeatedly participated in the competition for sustainable mobility in Europe – the “Shell Eco-marathon”. The futuristic chassis made of carbon fibers has a very low air resistance, needing in combination with the electric motor and the energy of a fuel cell only a very limited amount of fuel – or rather hydrogen. With approximately one liter of premium grade petrol “Sax 4” was repeatedly able to cover more than 2,000 kilometers over the course of this competition and managed to land on a good ranking in the prototype-class. “Fortis Saxonia” will participate in the Shell Eco-marathon with a novel ultra-lightweight and highly efficient fuel cell vehicle in London in 2017.
The Chemnitz University is also present at the three-day lasting Trend Forum of the car showroom Chemnitz: The T.U.C. Racing e.V., established by students of the university in 2015, presents its project on all three days of the fair forum. Their goal is to take part in the “Formula Student” with their own electric racing car in 2018. The project is supported by the Professorship of Advanced Powertrains of the Chemnitz University. The Professorship invites at the Trend Forum on March 17 the visitors of the fair to a “clean ride into vacation”. Michael Schrank and Philipp Jendras present the advantages of an electric car in comparison to a fuel cell vehicle. The prominent question in most discussion is “battery or fuel cell?” whereas the answer of the scientists is “battery and fuel cell”. With two scenarios – a ride to the Ore Mountains or a ride to the beach – they want to show that both vehicle types have their own eligibility and future prospects.
The Faculty of Computer Sciences will present new technologies for the programming of driver assistance systems on March 19. At 2.30 p.m., Prof. Wolfram Hardt will demonstrate on the so-called “YellowCar” connection concepts of vehicle, driver assistance and cloud services. Master students of the Automotive Software Engineering put those into practice in the course of their studies.
The car saloon Chemnitz is open on March 17, from 10 a.m. till 11 p.m. and on March 18 and 19, from 10 a.m. till 6 p.m. in the Messe Chemnitz. A day ticket costs 7 euros (reduced 5,50€). On Saturday and Sunday after 4 p.m. a reduced evening ticket can be purchased for 5,50€. Children up to six years are free of charge in company of their parents. A family ticket is valid for two adults and all own children up to the age of 14 and costs 16 euros.
