Return to Albania

Academic exchange between Chemnitz and the Balkans will be continued

The southeast European cooperation of the Chemnitz University will be continued – students and lecturers from Germany, Serbia, Macedonia and Albania cooperate in the topic of “Digesting Crises in Europe: Deconstructing and Constructing Media Texts in Dialogue”.

As in the years of 2013 and 2014, the four cooperation partners head into a new project that is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the course of the “Ost-West-Dialog: Hochschuldialog mit den Ländern des westlichen Balkans 2017-2018”. Vincenzo Dheskali, a native Albanian, was one of the participants of the Summer School in 2014 and got a big step closer to his dream of doctoral studies in Germany. This year, Vincenzo will take over the coordination of the new project and share his in Chemnitz acquired knowledge with the students of his former university.  He feels honored by working together with his former lecturers and professors during the course of the project.

The project links the fields of English Linguistics, Media Research, and Cultural Studies. The main focus of the project is still on the teaching of reading and writing standards with the aim to improve the teaching at partner universities and to develop a European standard. In contrast to the old project in which academic texts were discussed, focuses the new project on media texts. Those are especially important in the democratic dialogue as populistic discourse often directs against the media and the scientific and practical handling of media texts improves the resilience of the students and lecturers.

This years’ Summer School will take place at Lake Ohrid, where the famous Ohrid Summer music festival takes place at the same time, making the Summer School not only an academic but also a cultural experience. But first, the leader team will come together in a workshop in Nis (Serbia) to plan specific details and teaching contents. As in previous years, a scientific publication for the further qualification of the participants and further use in lectures at the partner universities will be provided at the end of the stay. And this time Vincenzo will not contribute as a student, but for the first time as a lecturer. (Author: Jessica Dheskali)
