More mathematics thanks to diploma
Chemnitz University offers modularized diploma program Mathematics beginning next winter semester
Chemnitz University of Technology will introduce the new modularized diploma program Mathematics in the winter semester 2018/19. This additional program complements the portfolio of the Department of Mathematics and extends the already existing bachelor and master degree program variety. The standard period of study in this program is nine semesters. The diploma program differs from the existing programs due to its continuous study period and the predominant choice of lectures during the main course program. Furthermore, bachelor and master degree students have the possibility to transfer into the new diploma program and vice versa within the first two semesters.
The diploma program will consist of a four-semester basic study and an immediately following five-semester main study. The basic study will cover the for all students obligatory lectures such as analysis, linear algebra, numeric, optimization, stochastics, and other subject areas. During the main study, the choice of courses and lectures is predominantly free.
A degree in mathematics is currently in high demand on the job market. Thus, graduates will find attractive job offers in research and development departments of industry and software enterprises as well as in the fields of banking, insurance, and consulting.
High degree of freedom still straight to the degree in nine semesters
Prof. Christoph Helmberg, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, emphasizes the diverse design possibilities of the program in particular: “A diploma allows to further orientate the timing and content design on personal interests.” Thus, this course of study would contribute to the character development and scientific maturity of the graduates in a special way.
The new diploma program is especially suitable for prospective students who already know at the beginning of their studies, that they want a straightforward education over nine semesters to graduate with an international approved degree. Furthermore, this course of study still covers the reliable education in the core areas of mathematics including a side subject but with a high degree of freedom of choice, emphasizes dean Helmberg.
Background: the diploma program at Chemnitz University
Beginning in June 2017, the Chemnitz University President’s Office paved the way for the introduction of modularized diploma programs on the basis of a requested decision-making within the departments. At that time, Prof. Gerd Strohmeier, University President, gave various reasons for this step. “First, the request and high demand for diploma programs was clearly expressed outside and within the university. Secondly, a diploma is still a trade mark that has a national and international outstanding reputation. Thirdly, the introduction of diploma programs increases the competitiveness of Chemnitz University.” Thus, there is no longer any disadvantage towards universities with diploma programs and an advantage towards universities without diploma programs. It is important to notice, that the diploma programs will not be introduced as substitute to bachelor and master course degrees but as addition.
