Chemnitz NMUN delegation ranks among the best in the world
Chemnitz University team received seven awards at the worldwide biggest and most professional diplomacy simulation of the United Nations in New York
With seven awards, the student delegation of Chemnitz University of Technology ranks among the best teams participating in the National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference from March 18th till 22nd, 2018, in New York. In this competition with innumerable universities, including very renowned ones from all over the globe, the team impressed on a high level – just like last year. Almost 5,500 students of over 400 universities participate in the realistic UN simulation every year.
During the four-day conference, the Chemnitz delegation represented the interests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, held speeches in the conference language English, negotiated compromises, and drafted and passed resolutions. The NMUN recognizes two different kinds of awards: on the one hand, the award for the overall performance of the delegation during the simulation in all committees, and on the other hand, an award for the preparation in each committee.
This year, Chemnitz University was honored with seven awards and thus ranks among the best NMUN teams worldwide. The delegation received a “Position Paper” award in six committees, presented for excellent preparation of the delegates on topics dealt within the committees. In the General Assembly, the delegates received awards for GA2 (First Committee: Disarmament and International Security), GA3 (Third Committee: Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian) and GA5 (Fifth Committee: Administrative and Budgetary and General), respectively. Furthermore, the Chemnitz delegation received three awards for the preparation in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Another award was presented to Chemnitz University for the overall performance of the delegation during the conference.
Keyword: National Model United Nations Simulation (NMUN)
The National Model United Nations simulation is a business game and even older than the UNO itself. The predecessors of the conference already simulated the League of Nations in 1972. By now, schools and universities in over 40 countries worldwide organize so-called “Model United Nations” (MUNs). Among these numerous UN conferences, the NMUN in New York is the biggest and most professional simulation of them all. Additionally, the participants of the NMUN conference are allowed to hold their meetings and to celebrate their closing event in the traditional hall of the general assembly in the UN headquarters in New York. Main objective of the conference is to deal openly and unbiased with the positions of other countries and cultures, to understand complex relations of international matters, and to understand and solve negotiations with negotiating skills and diplomatic sensitivity. Since 2004, Chemnitz University delegations participate in the NMUN conference and have already been awarded several prizes for their outstanding achievements. Chemnitz University of Technology is the only university in Saxony to take on this challenge every year. In the past, the delegations of Chemnitz University already represented the following countries: Macedonia, Georgia, Estonia, Vietnam, United Arab Emirates, Israel, Namibia, Ukraine, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Libya, Mali, Chad, the Central African Republic and most recently the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
