CHE Rankings: Students Give Chemnitz University High Scores
Students who are looking for a university with a strong research tradition, which offers a high level of support and practice-oriented programmes are in the right place at Chemnitz University of Technology
With study offerings in areas such as Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, German Studies and Psychology, Chemnitz University of Technology is one of Germany’s top destinations for students. This is one of the findings from the recently published university rankings from the Center for Higher Education Development (Centrum für Hochschulentwicklung), in which more than 300 universities and colleges in German-speaking countries were thoroughly studied. In addition to information about studies, teaching, equipment and research, the rankings include impressions from students regarding the study conditions at their university. The results were published on 7 May 2019 in the ZEIT 2019/2020 study guide.
Numerous study programmes placed at the top
In this year’s study guide, Chemnitz University is often recommended to prospective students who are in need of high levels of guidance and good study conditions in order to quickly reach their goals. The engineering departments at the university, such as Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics, score high with a large share of research funding. This has a positive effect on the research aspects of the study programmes. The latest findings within the fields are quickly integrated into the classroom. In addition, from the students’ point of view, contact with the profession is also quite good. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering receives very positive assessments in the areas of mentoring, general study situations, classroom space and opportunities to study abroad. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology as well as the Institute for German Studies and Intercultural Communication at the Faculty of Humanities are particularly praised for the international orientation of their courses of study. According to the CHE survey, completion of these degree programmes at Chemnitz are quite possible within a reasonable amount of time. In the Psychology programme, support given at the commencement of studies is also highly praised.
Living in Chemnitz is especially affordable
In addition, Chemnitz is again shown to be the least expensive university city in Germany. The average monthly rent for a room in a shared flat is 230 euros in Chemnitz, across Germany the average is 363 euros. This information is based on an evaluation of about 67,000 housing advertisements on the internet portal www.wg-gesucht.de. Rent prices in dormitories in Chemnitz currently fluctuate between 169 and 276 euros per month, depending on room size. In addition, the availability of student housing in Chemnitz is above the national average. Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau offers about 2,100 spots in dormitories on campus.
