We recommend the following search tools for searching keywords in economics:
The STW Thesaurus for Economics of the ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics facilitates searches with its almost 6,000 subject headings
The Business Source Complete database has integrated a business thesaurus on its website.
GenerativeAI such as ChatGPT from OpenAI, MS Copilot, the GWDG LLM Service or HuggingChat can also help with the search for synonyms and related terms.
Icon Lupe Enter your search terms in the search bar of your search tools. Use the appropriate search query/search strategy for each search instrument by taking Boolean operators (only German), runcations and wildcards, phrase searches, database-specific keywords, etc. into account. You can find out which operators are used in which database on their help pages.
Icon Lupe You may use the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS) checklist to check whether your search strings match your research question.
Icon Lupe A complementary backward and forward citation search („snowballing“) could be helpful (Wohlin 2014).
Icon Lupe Make a note of all the records retrieved from each search, for example in a spreadsheet editor such as Excel or a reference management programme such as Zotero or Citavi.
