Summer School „Modelling and Simulation in Materials and Surface Technology“ held for the first time
This year, the Chair of WOT hosted the "Modelling and Simulation in Materials and Surface Engineering" summer school for the first time. From 30 September to 2 October 2024, fifteen participants learned with great success how to generate models from the theories discussed in our lectures and experimentally collected data and how to use them in simulations.

WOT excursion to Scholz Recycling GmbH
On 16 September 2023, the employees of the WOT professorship were able to visit Scholz GmbH together at one of its largest processing sites in Espenhain near Leipzig. We spent three hours on site and learnt first-hand about the challenges and physical limits of separating and recycling scrap. The highlight was the guided tour of the company premises, where we experienced the impressive processes involved in handling and processing several hundred thousand tonnes of scrap every year.

Interdisciplinary DFG project „Method and model development for the simulation of layer thickness distributions on complex shaped components during galvanic layer deposition“
For over a year now, a project at the WOT professorship has been working on using numerical process simulation to minimise both costs and experimental expenses in the optimisation of real galvanic processes. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) (project number 524933028).

16.07.2024 Research at the professorship

GIGA – Green and intelligent electroplating for the supply of relevant aircraft components based on modular, robot-based electroplating with inline process monitoring
On 9 July 2024, the LuFo project GIGA started with a successful kick-off meeting at Chemnitz University of Technology. The project aims to develop a green and intelligent electroplating process using modular, robot-based electroplating with inline process monitoring. This enables safe and reproducible coating of relevant aircraft components in small and medium batch sizes. The project is supported and funded by the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (BMWK).

Doctoral seminar 2024 – On the accompanied path to Dr.-Ing.
Once again this year, internal and external doctoral students met at the Chair of WOT from 24 to 26 June 2024 to present the current status of their doctoral project to their supervisor Prof. Thomas Lampke and other experts. The doctoral topics of the 16 young scientists cover a broad scientific spectrum from galvanic and thermal surface technology to bio-based coatings, the mechanical behaviour of high-performance materials and sustainability concepts in materials and surface technology.
