New York is the Big Apple, Jakarta is the Big Durian. Although, the national motto is “Bhineka Tunggal Ika” meaning: “Unity in Diversity”, the Indonesian capital is not a melting pot, but rather a conglomerate of idiosyncrasies. Just like its nickname giver, this strange-smelling fruit, you will either love or hate the city. Jakarta with its population of over 10 million and an area of about 660 square kilometers is a city of contrasts: It is comprised of kotas, which are modern metropolitan areas, absorbing the kampungs, rural villages. Simultaneously, the city maintains its exclusive gated communities and habours slums. Moreover, the city represents just 0.03 percent of the country’s territory, yet it produces 17 percent of the national GDP. Jakarta, Indonesia’s financial and business hub, consists of the towns of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi, combined in the acronym ‘Jabodetabek’. Greater Jakarta is divided into five main districts each self-contained with facilities such as hospitals, schools, universities, shopping centres and religious buildings.

For Students from Indonesia:
Chemnitz University of Technology, specifically the Institutes of English and American Studies, of Intercultural Communications, of the Study Program for Primary Teacher Training (BA), and the Institute of European Studies arranged a cooperation with the Atma Jaya Language Learning Center agreeing on a short- and long-term exchange programme. Experience Exchange:
This is your chance for “hands-on” foreign language teaching experience when you are planning your semester abroad. Learn how English is being taught or which pedagogical strategies are applied in a formerly European colony which was not dominated by English cultural influences. As a student majoring in English Literature(s) you can actually experience what is means to “read the Canon and Beyond” and how postcolonial theory works in practice. Moreover, this agreement offers a great chance for practical cultural encounters or linguistic research projects regarding phonology, world Englishes and variations. The intended cross-cultural learning environment also welcomes English speaking Indonesian students to be a great asset in research and teaching at Chemnitz University of Technology. As an Indonesian student in Germany, you can learn how English is taught, practised and researched in a non-English speaking European country and experience our pedagogic strategies as well as cultural setting.
