New Appointments at the University
As of March 1, 2023, two professors have been newly appointed to Chemnitz University of Technology by the president

Prof. Dr. Ulrike Deppe was appointed to the Faculty of Humanities at Chemnitz University of Technology on March 1, 2023. She heads the Professorship of General Educational there.
Prof. Dr. Matthias Thürer has also been appointed to Chemnitz University of Technology as of March 1, 2023. At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering he heads the Professorship of Factory Planning and Intralogistics.
About the person: Prof. Dr. Ulrike Deppe
Ulrike Deppe studied education at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. For her doctorate, also in Halle, she received a scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation. She completed her doctorate on the topic "Peer groups as a reproduction and transformation instance of familial educational inequality? Reconstructions of the fit between the school- and lifeworld-related orientation frameworks of ca. 13-year-olds, their parents, and their friends" in 2014 with distinction.
Between 2011 and 2015, she worked as a research assistant at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in the research group "Mechanisms of Elite Education in the German Education System", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 2015, she moved to a postdoctoral research position at the Center for School and Educational Research in Halle, where she conducted her own DFG project on the topic of "Biographical Trajectories and Career Paths of Graduates of Exclusive Boarding Schools in Germany".
Between 2018 and 2023, she continued her research at the University in Halle, and also held professorships at TU Dresden and Ruhr University Bochum during this time before accepting the invitation to join Chemnitz University of Technology. At Chemnitz University of Technology, she would like to continue and deepen her previous research on the reproduction of social inequality through education and the transnationalization of educational biographies. In addition, she will take a new look at the consequences of digitalization for the growing up of young people and their educational conditions.
About the person: Prof. Dr. Matthias Thürer
Matthias Thürer was trained as a locksmith before he studied mechanical engineering at the TU Berlin. He completed his doctorate in operations management at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in 2011. He then conducted research as a postdoctoral researcher at the Federal University of Sao Carlos (Brazil). In 2014, he took over the Professorship of Industrial Engineering at Jinan University (Zhuhai, P.R. China). In 2022, he became Professor in Operations Management at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria in Steyr, before accepting the invitation to join Chemnitz University of Technology.
How to achieve more with less is one of the questions that will drive the next decades. Resources are becoming scarcer and consequently more expensive. The climate is changing, partly due to excessive use of resources, and more and more people are becoming aware that their consumption decisions can have unintended consequences in other parts of the world. This is where Matthias Thürer wants to center his research, developing simple solutions for complex problems. This applies, for example, to the fundamentals of process design. A major concern in his teaching is to give students the ability to independently develop solutions for the challenges of the future.
