University Library building: Tell us your story!

The new home of the University Library, the “Former Spinning Mill”-building, looks back on an eventful history and diversified usages. Although we are intensively working on it, we still do know too little about our new home.

Assist us with your souvenirs, individual stories and items as well to “bring more light into the darkness” of the history of the “Former Spinning Mill”-building!

  • You have worked in the “Former Spinning Mill”-building? You have individual souvenirs regarding the diversified usages of the building? You know other stories around the history of the “Old Spinning Mill”-building? You are welcome to send them via email to the Director of the University Library, Angela Malz, (email: ).
  • You possess items related to the “Former Spinning Mill”-building which you would like to hand over to the University Library? You are welcome to arrange a personal appointment with the Director of the University Library, Angela Malz (phone: +49 371 531-31781, email: ).
  • The further usage of your stories resp. an agreement regarding items handed over are naturally coordinated with you.

University Library Book Donation

In exceptional cases, the University Library accepts selected books of private collections based on prior assessment which are in good shape at minimum, which are corresponding to the structure of subjects and which are not already available in its collections.

In the case that you think to have books complying with those criteria, please proceed as follows.

  • Please search at first in the online-catalog of the University Library whether the books intended for donation are not already available in the collections or the University Library.
  • Make a list of those books for which your search in the online-catalog showed “No results”. Your list should include at least the following indications: author, title, year of publication.
  • Submit this list via email to the Subject Specialist responsible for the subject of (the greatest part of) your books.
  • The Subject Specialist will then check your list and inform you in which books the Library is interested in integration in its collections.
  • Fill in the forms "Declaration on donation in kind (German)" and "Appendix on donation in kind (German)" and enclose them with the books selected by the Subject Specialist. Please do not forget to tick whether you need a donation receipt or not.
  • Subsequently, you may either send your book donation (jointly with the forms mentioned above) via postal mail to Universitätsbibliothek Chemnitz, Straße der Nationen 33, [Subject Specialist responsible], 09107 Chemnitz or hand it in personally at the information desk at the ground floor of the Library building.
  • In the case that you have ticked it in the Declaration on donation in kind and subsequent to the integration of your book donation in the University Library collections, you will receive a donation receipt which may be used for tax purposes. However, as this causes a certain processing effort, we ask for your patience in this respect in advance.

Other University Library Donations in kind

You possess other materials and/ or items related to Chemnitz University of Technology or to its predecessor institutions since 1836, such as study documents, photo/image/map/audio-material, specific (minor) furnishings from your period of studies etc. which you would like to hand over to the University Library?

In this case, the University Archives located in the same building are the right contact for you.

  • You arrange an individual appointment with the University Archives (phone: +49 371 531-13170, email: ). t would be very helpful if you already could tell on the occasion of the first contact which materials resp. items you would like to hand over.
  • You are naturally free in your decision whether your materials resp. items handed over shall completely become property of the University Archives or whether you prefer to hand them over as (permanent) loan. In the case last-mentioned, the property rights will stay with you.
  • According to your decision, the University Archives will consult you regarding an appropriate legal status and you will conclude a respective agreement.
