Automation and digitalization of railway functions (AuDiBaF)

As part of the DZM project AuDiBaF, the Chair of Computer Architectures and Systems at Chemnitz University of Technology is participating in the sub-project Human-Technology Interaction in Railway Operations - Investigation of Train Monitoring and Control, psychological and technical (TCM PT).

A large number of solutions for the autonomization and remote control of road vehicles already exist in road traffic. To date, there has been no comparable research in the context of rail operations and autonomous locomotives. Due to the high requirements for the acceptance of such solutions, a wide range of sensors and measurement technology is needed to accurately map the vehicle's environment. To efficiently process the resulting volume of data streams and convey its content to railway personnel, AI-based methods are being developed to classify the context of the vehicle and direct the attention of observers.

AuDiBaF aims to investigate the potential of digital teleoperation in rail operations. Rail transport is to be digitized and automated using interdisciplinary skills. Within the TCM sub-project, a workstation for a remote operator is to be designed to enable these projects.

In the technical part of the TCM sub-project, a computer system is being developed that is capable of processing and displaying incoming video and sensor data. Various algorithms and AI models for event identification and object recognition will be implemented. In collaboration with the participating professorships, the general framework of the overall system is being modeled in order to determine the maximum permissible end-to-end latencies. For this purpose, a digital twin is developed collaboratively, which combines the various models.
