- Network Planning: Development of AI-based optimization methods for the strategic planning of flexible and low-cost software-defined multilayer networks. The methods include approaches for life-cycle decision-making in long-term operated networks, optimizing tasks such as traffic routing, capacity dimensioning and topology and resilience planning. Application scenarios: 1) Planning of resilient and flexible Metro/Core ultra-wide-band (UWB) and space-division-multiplexed (SDM) IP-Optical systems for Fixed/Mobile 6G networks; 2) Planning of networked control systems, e.g. intelligent networks, smart grids.
- Data-Driven Network Control: Development of data-driven optimization algorithms for non-linear control of software-defined and networked control telecommunication systems. The algorithms include methods for system identification and in-operation control of large-scale stochastic networks. Application scenarios: network resource management, software-defined consistent network updates, traffic routing, traffic engineering, network reliability and dependability.
- Network Techno-Economics: Development of algorithms for the optimization of the technical and economic performance - i.e. the QoS, the profit, the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and the Long-Run Incremental Service Costs (LRIC) - of advanced network architectures and services. The methods investigate the evaluation of Real Options (RO) for the life-cycle adaptation of network designs subject to deep uncertainties in the traffic demands and costs. The developed approaches optimize key performance indicators (KPIs), including the service QoS as well as financial metrics such as the Payback Period (PB), the Net Present Value (NPV), the Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and the Return on Investment (ROI) of the network designs throughout their life-cycles.
- Network optimization methods: The above-mentioned research areas apply, develop and extend mathematical methods in the domains of - and not restricted to - Linear Programming (LP), Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO), Adjustable Robust Optimization (ARO), Deep-Reinforcement Learning (DRL), Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMC), Sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy), Koopman Operator Theory (KOT), Model-Free Non-Linear Network Control, Stochastic Programming (SP), Monte Carlo simulations and Exploratory Modelling of large-scale stochastic networks.
- VINO (Virtual Network Optimization). Project funded from 2013 till 2016 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung). Project status: Completed. Role: Research Scientist.
- SENDATE (Secure Networking for a Data Centre Cloud in Europe). European Celtic-Plus project funded from 2016 till 2019 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung). Project status: Completed. Role: Research Scientist.
- AI-NET-PROTECT (Artificial Intelligence Networking Providing Resilient and Secure Networks to Critical Infrastructures). European Celtic-Plus project funded from 2021 till 2024 by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung). Project status: Completed. Role: Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI).
