RVK classification (RVK) – How the books are arranged on the shelf?
In libraries there are different possibilities how the books can be arranged. From formal criteria, such as the date on which the book was included into the library collection (Numerous-Currens), to classified shelving system in which the books is assigned to a subject area, to a mixture of both.
In English-speaking countries, the best known classification are the Dewey-Decimal Classification (DDC) and the Library of Congress Classification (LCC). The best known in German-speaking countries probably is the Regensburger Verbundklassifikation (RVK) .
You may have already discovered the term "call number" in a result display, e.g. QT 000 end or MR 2000 die. This designation contains both the thematic allocation within the RVK, and the location in the library at which your searched book is arranged on the shelf.
Since books with related contents stand next to each other on the shelf, you can find other suitable literature on your topic there.
This search can also be done in the catalog and all books with the same shelf location will be displayed.
